Not exactly sure what compounding is, or what it can do for you? Hopefully we can answer some of these questions for you in this section. |

What is Compounding?
Pharmacy compounding is the art of preparing medications from “scratch” using pure ingredients by a pharmacist. It means we weigh out, measure, mix and prepare each medication in our pharmacy.
Compounding is all about problem-solving. Working within the problem-solving triad form medications – Patient, Prescriber and Pharmacist, we can come up with a patient-specific medication that meets your specific need or problem.
How can compounding help me?
There are many ways that compounding can help you.
First, No two people are exactly alike, so it makes sense that not all people should be taking the same exact medication. Thus, the most important reason for compounding is to be able to tailor-make medications to fit your exact needs as an individual. You can think of compounded medications as “personalized” medicines.
Chronic pain has been shown in new studies to be better relieved with topically applied transdermal pain and with fewer side-effects compared to taking the same medications by mouth. These Pain Gels are only available at a compounding pharmacy
Natural or Bio-identical hormones for women that more closely resemble the body’s hormones and avoid many unpleasant side effects can be compounded to avoid the risks of synthetic hormones.
We can also help if you have any of the following medication problems: you have difficulty swallowing pills, or if your medication has been discontinued, or if your child refuses to take cherry-flavored medication, and it doesn’t come in any other flavor, or if you’re allergic to an inactive ingredient in your medication like dyes or preservatives, or if your tired of hearing phrases like, “there’s nothing on the market for you?” or “you’re just going to have to live with your problem.” We can custom-make your medication in a liquid instead of table, use a different or better flavor, or make your medication without the ingredients your allergic to.
Lastly, many formulations will never be commercially developed due to difficulty in obtaining patents and lack of market demand. Compounding allows for medical treatments that otherwise may not be possible.
There are many special needs in health care, and compounding allows us to meet those needs, one patient at a time.
Do I need a prescription for a compound?
Any medicine that is only available by prescription still needs to have a prescription to be compounded. Today, many physicians are familiar with compounding and are happy to write or phone in a prescription for a compound.
How can I get a compounded prescription?
The easiest and fastest way to get a compounded prescription is to have us fax a note to your doctor with our recommendation of the compounded medication for you. When they approve it, we call you to let you know it is ready to be picked up or shipped to you. Just let us know if you would like us to do this for you.
Does it matter where I get my compounded medication?
Because state compounding regulations are largely inexact and undefined, a compounded medication will have significant variation from one pharmacy to the next. Factors like education, equipment, experience, formula, techniques and sourcing of ingredients determine the ultimate Quality of the medication. And pharmacy schools do not prepare the pharmacist for the level of difficulty and complexity in compounding that we encounter everyday.
Because quality is our primary ingredient, we spare nothing to ensure the highest level of quality compounding available today. Your trust and confidence are well placed in The Compounding Shoppe.
